Built Structures and Natural Systems (Video)

June 28, 2017 |

Bruce Dunn, Principal Environment Specialist at Asian Development Bank discusses infrastructure projects and how to include nature in developmental decision making in this 5 minute video.

“Built structures such as dams, roads, and flood control works bring social and economic benefits. However, they can also significantly affect ecosystems. They can, for instance, impact fisheries by blocking fish migrations and access to spawning areas, altering water quality and quantity, changing the temporal and spatial relationship and nature of the flood cycle, and degrading or fragmenting aquatic habitats. This video underscores the need to innovate infrastructure: strategic environmental assessments and more creativity in project design and project financing can help and policy frameworks can be improved too.”
