La contribución de la naturaleza, el capital natural, al desarrollo económico y bienestar de los paises es innegable. Sin embargo, las decisiones políticas y económicas de los gobiernos son tradicionalmente guiadas por indicadores macroeconómicos, como el Producto Bruto Interno (PBI), que son insuficientes para reflejar las dimensiones ambientales y sociales del valor de la naturaleza en la economía. Es por eso que es importante contar con indicadores que permitan entender de mejor manera la relación naturaleza economía, y que estos sea adoptados como parte integral de las decisiones para el desarrollo sostenible.
El Sistema de Cuentas Nacionales (SCN), es el instrumento principal con el que cuenta un país para recolectar información estadística referente a la economía, mediante un conjunto de indicadores económicos. El interés de la comunidad internacional referente a temas ambientales ha ido creciendo durante las últimas décadas y consecuentemente, la División Estadística de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas ha desarrollado el Sistema de Contabilidad Ambiental y Económica (SCAE). Dicho sistema tiene como objetivo incluir información sobre diferentes recursos naturales y ambientales dentro del Sistema de Cuentas Nacionales. La información de dichas cuentas contribuiría a estimar lo que se conoce como “PBI verde”, el cual debe reflejar el consumo del capital natural.

The contribution of nature, natural capital, economic development and welfare of the countries is undeniable. However, political and economic decisions of governments are traditionally guided by macroeconomic indicators, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is insufficient to reflect environmental and social dimensions of the value of nature in the economy. That is why it is important to have indicators to better understand the nature relationship economy, and that these be adopted as an integral part of the decisions for sustainable development.
The System of National Accounts (SNA) is the main instrument with which a country to collect statistical information about the economy, through a set of economic indicators. The interest in environmental issues concerning international community has been growing over the last decades and consequently, the Statistical Division of the United Nations Organization has developed the System of Environmental and Economic Accounting (SEEA). This system aims to include information on different natural and environmental resources within the System of National Accounts. Information such accounts would help to estimate what is known as “green GDP”, which should reflect the consumption of natural capital.
