At this conference, you will find an international stage where you can demonstrate your commitment to success in sustainability and find best practices, concrete answers, new contacts and listen to inspirational speakers.

Conference programme
The conference is subtitled Let’s talk business! for a reason. At the plenary sessions, visionaries like Sarah Cornell (Planetary Boundaries Research Coordinator), Mark Gough (Executive Director of the Natural Capital Coalition) and Peter Bakker (President of the WBCSD) will deliver inspiring keynote speeches. How to change business on a big scale is presented by Chad Holliday (Shell and former chairman of WBCSD ) and European Commissioner Karmenu Vella reveals the European policy perspective on the sustainable use of natural capital.

A broad selection of breakout sessions will involve you more thoroughly in three themes: Knowledge & Tools, Innovation and Financing & Investing. Finding innovative ways of integrating green concerns into agricultural and infrastructural land use, embedding circular economy considerations in investment decisions and discovering big sustainable investment opportunities are among the topics tackled. These expert sessions are submitted and led by leading organizations such as Arcadis, EY, Otto Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Royal DSM, Nestlé and the Plastic Soup Foundation.

Get inspiration and practical knowledge at the international conference Natural Capital | Let’s talk business! on November 23-25 2016 at the Fokker Terminal in The Hague (the Netherlands).

The meeting is dedicated to exploring natural capital in practice. You’ll come away with inspiration and practical examples presented by frontrunners at both large and small organisations.

• Over the past five years, the Dutch Platform for Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Economics (PBEE) invested in practical cooperation with companies active in this field, focusing on small and medium businesses.

•The resulting experiences and lessons learned will be presented at an international conference in The Hague.

•The Platform focuses on natural capital and so does the conference. Natural Capital is a proven concept to make nature and biodiversity relevant to entrepreneurs and businesses. Also, as a sustainability theme, it has the potential to act as an umbrella for other approaches which are meant to improve our environment and our natural resources (such as circular economy, climate policy etc.).

•We look at Natural Capital in the context of the impending depletion of natural resources, accelerated by a growing world population and a globally expanding middle class with corresponding consumption patterns. To avoid crossing the planetary boundaries, it is important that economies sparingly use raw materials and natural resources. Companies play a crucial role.

•The conference is primarily for and by entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs who present a business case, entrepreneurs who shed light on the latest international developments, entrepreneurs who share their experiences with measuring and reporting, entrepreneurs who inspire others and offer practical advice on how to get started the day after.

•The conference not only looks back but also looks forward and intends to increase the number of companies that care for natural capital by integrating it into their business. This requires a standardized approach.

•A growing group of entrepreneurial frontrunners uses instruments such as LCA methodologies and the recently published Natural Capital Protocol. These tools help entrepreneurs to identify the pressures  on natural capital, based on which they can make informed decisions relevant to the conservation of natural capital.

•Financial institutions, civil society and governments are also crucial for scaling up and strengthening this movement which emphasizes the importance of Natural Capital. The conference brings all these parties together. Because everyone has their role to play, and because broad social cooperation is the key to successful, implementable solutions.

•To inspire entrepreneurs to jointly undertake further steps, during the conference agreements  will be made about the required next steps. Agreements amongst entrepreneurs, and agreements with other parties, including civil society organizations and governments.

•The agreements will be introduced during the Business & Biodiversity Forum and the meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (December – Mexico).

•The agreements will lead to concrete actions and will help entrepreneurs move forward : Let’s talk business
