Natural Capital Accounts are maturing into their adolescence. Where once reports focussed on ambition and theory they increasingly provide reliable consistent metrics. The ONS collaboration with DEFRA to produce UK Natural Capital Accounts has now been running for 8 years. Along with the rest of the world’s practitioners we have moved a long way in that time and the next update is due on October 18th.

We expect that as analysts no longer need spend as much of their time constructing methods they are likely to turn their efforts towards on adding value through analysis, standardisation and dissemination. Current approaches vary significantly and which definitions and methods are spread from the early adopters will shape the future. The next few years may therefore prove to be incredibly important in the development of the Natural Capital approach and its impact on society and the environment.

At this pivotal point The ONS will hold a conference to better explore the different approaches of established Natural Capital accounts. Comparable high profile accounts will be presented in side by side followed by panel discussions to explore where approaches differ. At national, city-region and corporate scales we will explore the baseline that has been set before considering how Natural Capital Accounting will develop and its likely impact.
