Oceans cover nearly three quarters of the planet and provide a multitude of benefits including food, tourism, energy, and up to half of our oxygen. Even so, we are not doing enough to protect them. To address the challenges facing our oceans, the Coalition will develop an Oceans Supplement to the Natural Capital Protocol. On May 12th, we launched this project with an interactive workshop: ‘Valuing the Oceans: scoping a Supplement to the Natural Capital Protocol’.
The workshop brought together global leaders in the ‘oceans space’, to establish the need, identify expertise, and develop the scope for an Oceans Supplement. This workshop was convened in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Conservation International (CI), and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The learnings from this well-attended workshop are being used by the Coalition, CI and NOAA to develop a briefing paper for the Supplement. A summary of the workshop is available here.
As with all Coalition projects, it will be collaborative and involve the diverse range of interests and expertise that already exist in this field within business, government, conservation, science and academia, finance and standard setting. It will agree on the key challenges and produce practical solutions.
If you are interested in getting involved there are several levels of engagement:
