Governments have a critical role to play in creating the enabling environment needed to redefine value and transform decision-making. In 2017 the Coalition brought together governments from around the world to identify best practices and to strengthen their enabling roles through the Government Dialogue on Natural Capital. Now, we are extending this dialogue to all capitals.
By creating an enabling environment that encourages the adoption of the capitals approach, governments and policymakers can play a crucial role in incentivizing and scaling sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges.
Governments increasingly recognize this potential for transformative change. The Coalition helps to accelerate their work by brining governments together in an open, pre-competitive space to share best practice, leverage success, connect powerful and engaged communities and identify the areas, projects and partnerships where we can deliver transformational change.
An enabling environment in the context of a capitals approach has been defined by the community as:
The context needed to support the transition to a society in which the capitals approach is an integral part of public and private decision-making.
The Government Dialogue on Natural Capital has provided a platform for governments to explore and strengthen the role of national governments and their interactions with the private sector in scaling up and mainstreaming the capitals approach. So far, we have brought together representatives from 35 countries*.
The Dialogue opens up discussion around best practices, allows policymakers to share their experiences and ambition and creates a space to explore opportunities for collaboration with the aim of strengthening the enabling role of governments around the world.
You can engage with the Government Dialogue project and our community on the online Government Dialogue Hub. The Hub provides a space for policymakers to continue their engagement and collaboration around embedding the value of all capitals in decision-making.
Through this project, the Coalition is hosting a series of online meetings to explore the leavers of action for policymakers in applying a capitals approach, including natural, social and human capital considerations. Governments from around the world will be invited to present their applications and to inspire other policymakers to include value of nature, people and society in their decision-making.
